The Death of April Holt: A Mother’s Fight to Uncover the Truth

In the summer of 2023, what was initially classified as a tragic suicide in Nashville, Tennessee, turned into a heartbreaking case of domestic violence and deception that shook a family and eventually drew national attention. Twenty‑nine‑year‑old April Holt, a mother of two and a vibrant presence in her community, died under suspicious circumstances that would not have been fully revealed without the relentless pursuit of her grieving mother.

A Life Ended Too Soon

On July 31, 2023, first responders were called to the home April shared with her husband in the Cane Ridge neighborhood of Nashville. She was found unresponsive in the bathroom with a plastic bag taped tightly around her neck. Paramedics transported her to Southern Hills Hospital, where she later died. At the time, the Nashville Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her death a suicide, citing suffocation as the cause.

April was a devoted mother to an eight‑year‑old son and a twelve‑year‑old daughter. Friends and family described her as loving, optimistic, and full of plans for the future — recent plans that included attending church events and caring for her children. These facts didn’t sit right with her mother, Jamie Dickerson, who began to question the official conclusion almost immediately.

A Mother’s Intuition

Dickerson was convinced something about her daughter’s death “didn’t add up.” She noticed troubling signs from the scene and in April’s injuries — bruises on her neck, ankles, and other parts of her body that seemed inconsistent with suicide. Her doubts grew as she learned details about April’s life leading up to the day she died: she had requested a divorce from her husband two weeks earlier, and there had been reported arguments between the couple in the days before her death.

With the official investigation stalled, Jamie began her own independent inquiry. She combed through case reports, followed up on inconsistencies, and eventually confronted April’s husband, Donovan Holt, in a recorded FaceTime call in June 2024. In that conversation, Donovan admitted to strangling April and staging the scene to look like a suicide. Jamie turned that recording over to authorities.

Confession and Legal Consequences

Once law enforcement had the recorded confession, the Metro Nashville Police Department reopened the case. Authorities interviewed Donovan Holt themselves, and he repeated his admission of responsibility to detectives with the MNPD Cold Case Unit. He acknowledged strangling April and then placing the bag over her face in an attempt to conceal the crime.

In September 2024, Holt was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, where he had relocated, and was extradited back to Tennessee to face charges including reckless homicide, tampering with evidence, and false reporting.

In November 2024, Holt pleaded guilty to those charges. On February 18, 2025, he was sentenced to two years in prison, followed by eight years of community supervision. The plea deal avoided more severe charges such as murder, a point of frustration for April’s family, though they accepted the outcome and have continued to honor April’s memory.

Legacy and Aftermath

April’s death and the circumstances surrounding it drew widespread attention to issues of domestic violence, investigative rigor, and how initial conclusions can sometimes hide the truth. In her daughter’s memory, Jamie Dickerson has worked to create a support network for grieving families and raise awareness about recognizing signs of abuse.

April Holt’s story is a sobering reminder of how perseverance and love can uncover justice — even when the system initially fails to see the signs.
