The Disappearance of Karlie Gusé?

In October 2018, the unexplained disappearance of 16-year-old Karlie Lain Gusé from a remote area of Eastern California became one of the most haunting missing-person cases in recent years. Despite confirmed sightings, extensive search efforts, and years of investigation by local authorities and the FBI, Karlie has never been found, and no physical trace of her has ever surfaced.

Karlie Lain Gusé was born on May 13, 2002. At the time she went missing, she lived with her father and stepmother in Chalfant Valley, a small, rural community in Mono County, California. She was a high school student described by those who knew her as intelligent and creative. In the months leading up to her disappearance, however, Karlie had been experiencing emotional and behavioral struggles. She had faced disciplinary action at school related to marijuana possession and was reportedly attending counseling.

On the evening of October 12, 2018, Karlie spent time with her boyfriend and friends in Bishop, California. Witnesses later said that she smoked marijuana that night. Shortly afterward, her behavior changed dramatically. She became paranoid, fearful, and increasingly disoriented. Concerned, her boyfriend contacted Karlie’s stepmother, Melissa Gusé, who went to pick her up around 8:00 p.m.

When Melissa arrived, Karlie was reportedly running along a dark road, visibly frightened and confused. During the drive home, her behavior became more erratic. She moved between seats, cried, and expressed irrational fears, including the belief that the vehicle itself was trying to kill her. Once they arrived home, Karlie continued to display signs of severe distress. Her pupils appeared dilated, she seemed disconnected from reality, and she reacted fearfully to ordinary stimuli. At one point, she attempted to eat but spat the food out, calling lettuce “the devil’s lettuce.” Fearing for Karlie’s safety, Melissa chose to sleep in her bedroom that night to keep an eye on her.

Early the next morning, October 13, Melissa woke around 5:30 a.m. and saw Karlie awake and seemingly calm in her bed. A few hours later, sometime between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m., Karlie was gone. She had left the house quietly, without her phone, wallet, shoes, jacket, or any personal belongings. There were no signs of forced entry or struggle. Given the cold desert morning and Karlie’s fragile mental state the night before, her disappearance immediately raised alarm.

Later that morning, multiple independent witnesses reported seeing Karlie walking alone along Highway 6, south of her home. These sightings are considered credible and confirm that she was alive after leaving the house. Witnesses described her as wearing a white T-shirt and gray pants, inadequately dressed for the weather, and appearing confused or disoriented. Some recalled her waving or holding a piece of paper as she walked along the desolate highway surrounded by open desert.

Once Karlie was reported missing, law enforcement launched a large-scale search effort. Helicopters, drones, and K-9 units were deployed, along with ground search teams who combed the surrounding desert terrain, ravines, and abandoned structures. Hundreds of square miles were searched over several days and revisited multiple times in the months that followed. Despite the scope and intensity of these efforts, no physical evidence was ever recovered. No clothing, personal items, or remains connected to Karlie were found.

As the investigation continued, the FBI joined the case and offered a reward for information leading to Karlie’s recovery. Age-progressed images were released, and the case was featured in a multi-part public awareness video series in hopes of generating new leads. Despite national attention, no confirmed sightings or credible tips have emerged since the morning Karlie was last seen.

Karlie Gusé,

Investigators have acknowledged that Karlie appeared to be experiencing a severe mental health episode at the time she disappeared, possibly triggered or intensified by substance use. There were reports that she had experienced paranoia in the past, and unconfirmed claims that she had contacted a suicide hotline weeks earlier. Law enforcement has never classified the case as a suicide, and no evidence has been found to suggest she intended to harm herself.

Several theories have been considered over the years. One possibility is that Karlie wandered into the desert in a confused state and died from exposure, dehydration, or injury. However, the complete absence of remains or belongings, despite extensive searches in harsh but open terrain, has caused many to question this explanation. Another theory suggests that Karlie may have encountered someone while walking along the highway and was abducted or harmed. Yet there is no direct evidence of foul play, no witnesses reporting suspicious vehicles, and no signs of violence.

Public speculation intensified in 2021 after Karlie’s father was arrested in a domestic violence incident unrelated to her disappearance. Authorities have repeatedly stated that there is no evidence linking this event, or any family member, to Karlie’s disappearance. Still, the lack of answers has left room for doubt and unanswered questions.

As of 2026, Karlie Lain Gusé remains missing. Her case is still open and classified as endangered missing. She would now be in her early twenties. What makes her disappearance so unsettling is not only the mystery itself, but the contradictions surrounding it. Karlie vanished in daylight, was seen by multiple people, and yet left behind no trace. Years later, her fate remains unknown, and her case continues to linger as a reminder of how someone can seemingly disappear without explanation.

What really happened to Karlie Gusé that morning? Where did she go, and who, if anyone, might have been involved? Could she have survived in the desert, or did something more sinister occur? Will answers ever surface, and will Karlie’s family finally have closure?
