At one point, she attempted to eat but spat the food out, calling lettuce “the devil’s lettuce.” Fearing for Karlie’s safety, Melissa chose to sleep in her bedroom that night to keep an eye on her.
Early the next morning, October 13, Melissa woke around 5:30 a.m. and saw Karlie awake and seemingly calm in her bed. A few hours later, sometime between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m., Karlie was gone. She had left the house quietly, without her phone, wallet, shoes, jacket, or any personal belongings. There were no signs of forced entry or struggle. Given the cold desert morning and Karlie’s fragile mental state the night before, her disappearance immediately raised alarm.
Later that morning, multiple independent witnesses reported seeing Karlie walking alone along Highway 6, south of her home. These sightings are considered credible and confirm that she was alive after leaving the house. Witnesses described her as wearing a white T-shirt and gray pants, inadequately dressed for the weather, and appearing confused or disoriented. Some recalled her waving or holding a piece of paper as she walked along the desolate highway surrounded by open desert.
Once Karlie was reported missing, law enforcement launched a large-scale search effort.
