Gary Leon Ridgway, known infamously as the Green River Killer, embarked on a horrific spree of violence, claiming the lives of numerous women, primarily in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Ridgway's reign of terror spanned from the early 1980s to the late 1990s, leaving a trail of devastation in his wake.
Born on February 18, 1949, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Ridgway's early life was marked by turmoil and dysfunction. Raised in a troubled household, he witnessed violent disputes between his parents, and his mother was described as domineering. Ridgway himself struggled with psychological issues, including bed-wetting, which persisted until he was 13 years old. His mother's response to this, washing his genitals after each incident, may have contributed to his later disturbing behaviors.
As an adolescent, Ridgway harbored conflicting emotions towards his mother, including anger and sexual attraction, and reportedly fantasized about killing her. He was dyslexic and experienced academic challenges, eventually graduating from Tyee High School in 1969. However, his troubles extended beyond the classroom; at the age of 16, he committed a heinous act, stabbing a six-year-old boy who miraculously survived.

Ridgway's life took a new trajectory when he joined the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam War. It was during this time that he engaged in frequent sexual encounters with sex workers, ultimately contracting gonorrhea. Despite his religious conversion during his second marriage, Ridgway's voracious sexual appetite persisted, leading to infidelities and a tumultuous personal life.
The depths of Ridgway's depravity became evident as authorities uncovered the extent of his crimes. He preyed upon vulnerable women, many of whom were sex workers or underage runaways, luring them with promises of money or drugs before brutally strangling them. Ridgway's modus operandi involved dumping the victims' bodies in remote, wooded areas, often returning to engage in acts of necrophilia.

The magnitude of Ridgway's atrocities came to light gradually, with authorities initially suspecting him in the early 1980s. However, it wasn't until advancements in DNA profiling that Ridgway was definitively linked to the murders. In November 2001, he was apprehended as he left the Kenworth truck factory where he worked in Renton, Washington.
In a chilling revelation, Ridgway confessed to the murders of at least 71 women, although he was formally convicted of 49. Among his confirmed victims were:
