On the morning of July 29, 2012, 21-year-old Kortne Ciera Stouffer vanished from her apartment in Palmyra, Pennsylvania, leaving behind a mystery that remains unsolved more than a decade later. What makes her disappearance especially haunting is that nearly everything she owned was left behind — her purse, cellphone, keys, money, cigarettes, and even her beloved dog. There were no obvious signs of struggle, no confirmed sightings after that night, and no clear suspects. It was as if Kortne had simply disappeared into thin air.
Kortne was born on April 24, 1991, and was described by her family and friends as outspoken, energetic, social, and fiercely independent. She worked as a hairstylist and also helped with her father’s dog grooming business. Those who knew her said she was close to her family and rarely went more than a day without checking in. Her sudden disappearance was completely out of character.

The events leading up to her disappearance began on the evening of July 28, 2012. Earlier that night, police had responded to Kortne’s apartment after receiving a complaint about underage drinking. Several people were present, and her boyfriend at the time, who was on probation, was taken into custody for a violation. After police left, Kortne remained at her apartment.
Later that night, Kortne received messages from friends inviting her to go out. She met up with them at a bar in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where the group spent several hours drinking, dancing, and socializing. Witnesses later recalled that she appeared intoxicated but was not overly distressed. At some point, she became involved in a brief argument with another woman at the bar, but it did not escalate further.
Shortly before 3:00 a.m., Kortne and a male friend, later identified as Cody Pruett, returned to her apartment in Palmyra. Not long after they arrived, Kortne became involved in a loud verbal altercation with neighbors in the apartment below her. The dispute stemmed from ongoing tensions between Kortne and the downstairs residents, reportedly related to previous noise complaints and conflicts.
At approximately 3:12 a.m., police were called to the scene for a disturbance. Officers arrived, spoke briefly with those involved, and managed to calm the situation. They left shortly afterward. About forty minutes later, a second call was made regarding continued noise. When police returned, the apartment appeared quiet, and no one answered the door, so officers left without making contact.
According to Cody, he went to sleep inside Kortne’s apartment. When he woke up around 7:30 a.m., she was gone. Her car remained parked outside. Inside the apartment, everything appeared normal — her purse, phone, keys, money, and cigarettes were untouched. The television and air conditioner were still running, and her dog was inside, distressed and barking. There were no signs that Kortne had planned to leave or go anywhere.
When her mother arrived later that morning to check on her, she immediately sensed something was wrong. Kortne never would have left without her phone, keys, or dog. Family members described the scene as eerie, frozen in time, as if she had simply vanished mid-routine.
Police quickly labeled the case a suspicious disappearance, and later documents confirmed that kidnapping and foul play were being investigated. Despite extensive searches of nearby fields, wooded areas, lakes, and surrounding communities, no trace of Kortne was ever found.

Over the years, numerous tips and theories have emerged. One informant claimed Kortne was killed during a robbery for drugs and money, then wrapped in a rug and dumped into Memorial Lake, roughly twelve miles from her home. Authorities conducted sonar scans and cadaver dog searches of the lake, but nothing was recovered. Other tips suggested she may have been targeted by individuals she knew, while some pointed toward neighbors or individuals present that night.
The role of the male friend who stayed with her has also been heavily scrutinized. While he has maintained his innocence and cooperated with authorities, questions remain regarding timelines, behavior, and unexplained actions taken in the hours following her disappearance. Despite intense public speculation, no arrests have ever been made, and no suspects have been officially named.
Kortne’s disappearance was later added to the FBI’s ViCAP database, a system used to track violent crimes and potential links between cases. Investigators publicly stated that they strongly suspect foul play, though they have not disclosed many details of their findings.
Her family continues to fight for answers. Over the years, they have organized searches, media campaigns, social media outreach, and awareness efforts to keep her story alive. A reward of up to $100,000 has been offered for information leading to the resolution of the case. Despite these efforts, no credible leads have surfaced.
More than a decade later, the case of Kortne Ciera Stouffer remains one of Pennsylvania’s most haunting unsolved mysteries. With no physical evidence, no witnesses, and no confirmed sightings since that early morning, her disappearance continues to baffle investigators and devastate her loved ones.
Someone knows what happened inside that apartment. Someone knows what became of Kortne. Until that truth is revealed, her family and supporters are left with unanswered questions and a painful void that time has not healed.
Where did Kortne go? Who was the last person to truly see her alive? Was her disappearance the result of a spontaneous crime or something planned? And will the truth ever come out?
